SUGAR FREE
Sugar and high carbohydrate diets can lead to performance-robbing issues such as obesity and glucose intolerance (insulin resistance). When a horse eats sugar or a high carbohydrate meal there may be an energy burst followed by lethargy due to swings in blood sugar which can affect mood and energy. The problem is not necessarily an occasional sugar treat but the combination of multiple treats along with the hidden sugar in feeds, grains and supplements. When sugar or carbohydrates are consumed, the body releases insulin to promote the uptake of glucose into the cell for use as energy.
